چکیده

We demonstrate the ability of a highly simplified galactic model to generate mean-field magnetic fields. The generated large-scale magnetic field feeds back to the vertical density stratification which itself is one of the essentials of the basic α-effect. The non-magnetic part of the stratification is due to the gravity potential of the stellar component of the galactic disk. The rotation law of the gas also results from the stellar-disk potential. A uniform turbulence field with uniform correlation time of order of 10 Myr is completing the model. The high nonlinearity in the theory determines the amplitude of the generated magnetic field. If only the conventional α-quenching is involved in the code, then the magnetic amplitude would always exceeds 10 µG in contrast to the observations (Table 4). This value is only reduced to the observed numbers of a few µG if the complete magnetic feedback is considered also in the Reynolds equation (Table 3). The magnetic field configuration is always even with respect to the equator (quadrupolar) and all models with correlation times longer than 10 Myr are oscillating. Surprisingly enough, the magnetic influence on the vertical stratification does not lead to a thicker disk. The magnetic fields in our models in general lead to a flattening of the disk. Key words: magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) – turbulence – in-terstellar medium: magnetic fields – galaxies: magnetic fields

Magnetic fields near the peripheries of galactic discs

Context. Magnetic fields are observed beyond the peripheries of optically detected galactic discs, while numerical models of their origin and the typical magnitudes are still absent. Previously, studies of galactic dynamo have avoided considering the peripheries of galactic discs because of the very limited (though gradually growing) knowledge about the local properties of the interstellar medi...

Magnetic Fields in a Sample of Nearby Spiral Galaxies

Both observations and modeling of magnetic fields in the diffuse interstellar gas of spiral galaxies are well developed but the theory has been confronted with observations for only a handful of individual galaxies. There is now sufficient data to consider statistical properties of galactic magnetic fields. We have collected data from the literature on the magnetic fields and interstellar media...

A Dynamic Interstellar Medium: Recent Numerical Simulations

Recent numerical simulations of the interstellar medium driven by energy input from supernovae and stellar winds indicate that H I clouds can be formed by compression in shock waves and colliding turbulent streams without any help from thermal and gravitational instabilities. The filling factor of the hot phase in these models does not exceed 20–40% at the midplane. The hot gas is involved in a...

Direct simulations of a supernova-driven galactic dynamo

Context. Supernovae are known to be the dominant energy source for driving turbulence in the interstellar medium. Yet their effect on magnetic field amplification in spiral galaxies is still poorly understood. Analytical models based on the evolution of isolated, non-interacting supernova remnants predicted a dominant vertical pumping rendering dynamo action improbable. Aims. In the present wor...

Global galactic dynamo driven by cosmic-rays and exploding magnetized stars

We report first results of first global galactic-scale CR-MHD simulations of cosmicray-driven dynamo. We investigate the dynamics of magnetized interstellar medium (ISM), which is dynamically coupled with the cosmic-ray (CR) gas. We assume that exploding stars deposit small-scale, randomly oriented, dipolar magnetic fields into the differentially rotating ISM, together with a portion of cosmic ...
